| A letter our reader Henri received from Carl Zeiss -- Dear Henri, Thank you for your inquiry to Carl Zeiss. As a specialist for high performance lenses, we will continue to concentrate to develop, manufacture and distribute high-end lenses as perfect tools for many cameras in still photography and professional cinematography, like we do now for more than 120 years. We never built any camera body, and we do not plan to do this within the next future. But we plan to expand our current portfolio of lenses for further cameras systems in future. Sincerely, Bertram Hoenlinger |

A disappointing update concerning the digital rangefinder

Hmm, bummer. They still sell the Ikon but it seems to be a mere accessory to the lenses so they can offer "a complete solution." But hey, sounds like more glass for us in the future. :)
ReplyDeleteJepp. Zeiss was and is still a lens manufacturer. I would be surprised, if it where otherwise.
ReplyDeleteThe famous camera name CONTAX is now back home unused at Oberkochen! I guess we may see at the next Photokina an new digital Contax camera system, regardless whether as rangefinder or SLT camera.
ReplyDeleteSomething is definately in the mill, for shure!
All he says is that ZEISS never produced any camera bodies. But COSINA does. And this does not mean that COSINA might not one day manufacture a digital Ikon - although I believe an R-D2 or a digital Bessa is more probable.
ReplyDelete@ ano3,
ReplyDeletelast year, i have talked with a Zeiss member at a german in-house exhibition and asked him exact this question. His answer was believable and clear: "there will be no camera with a personal lensmount."
yes, this conversation was last year, but i don't think, there are major changes in the planning.
It would seem strange that Zeiss would go through so much work to get Contax back in the Family and in the house , then not do anything with it.
ReplyDeleteThe 645 was and still is one of the best out there. A true working mans 645 system.
And Zeiss/Contax had/have a very nice prototype produced and was ready to go just before the whole Kyocera Lock up of the Contax brand happened.
It is well known that Phase One had made Contax the chosen one, and would have been the platform of choice.
One can only hope they still see the light and should take a survey of how many pros , are still using this camera system.
Zeiss don't now and haven't recently made any cameras but Cosina have made some with a Zeiss badge on. So there may very well be a digital Zeiss Ikon or Contax if you prefer made for Zeiss but not by Zeiss!!!
ReplyDeleteA tip for Leica to profit even more from this Zeiss Ikon lacune :
ReplyDeletebring out a M9 version without Lcd screen , let's say a simplified version of it , call it the M6D , at a more affordable price, and sellings will boost even higher!!
Bye bye lazy Zeiss technicians...
'Zeiss technicians' make lenses, not cameras, you idiot. :')
ReplyDeleteKnow your history first : Zeiss technicians designed the ZM camera standards...Most of the Zeiss lenses for dslr are not made by Zeiss, but by Cosina.
ReplyDelete:-))
I still take pictures with a Contax RX, Contax 167 and -sometimes-with the "little grandmother" Contax 139. I like Contax. I change my Eos 5 by an e-Contax. Robert Capa look at us from the heaven and misses his Contax.
ReplyDeleteI WONT AN e-CONTAX !
